Engineering Bridge Project

The objectives of the first six weeks in Senior Seminar are to introduce the students to strategies used in an engineering design project and to expose students to effective teamwork methods.  Students work in groups to plan, design, and build a bridge that must meet many criteria. Students plan the placement of the bridge as well as the type of bridge to be constructed. Students  then complete a cost estimate based on project specifications and determine the final cost after construction. Students must also sketch conceptual drawings and draw scale models of the bridge. From the scale drawings, students indicate the forces of tension and compression of each structural member.  Students must also be aware of environmental laws and procedures on waste management and incorporate landscaping strategies.  The finale of the bridge project culminates at the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research building where the bridges are tested and judged by a variety of engineers.
